Would You Like to Be More Effective to See- Do-Get?

Would you like to be more effective? Reach organizational goals consistently? Lead a high-performing team?

In his classic leadership book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” Dr. Stephen Covey shares his See-Do-Get model. The way we “see” things like work, impacts what we “do” behavior or performance (engagement) and that behavior leads directly to what we “get” or the results.

It all begins with the way each individual “sees” the world, how do they “see” work, what are their paradigms? We all have our own unique lens through which we see the world and this lens (our paradigms) is a result of our experiences, values and beliefs, most of which we formed early in life.

Why should you care?

Understanding your team’s individual paradigms is a powerful leadership skill. To achieve the results that you want begins with examining the paradigms that are driving performance and engagement (the do).

“If you want to make minor changes in your life, work on your behavior. But if you want to make significant, quantum breakthroughs, work on your paradigms.” -Stephen R. Covey

Leaders, to accomplish the goals and objectives that you desire with your multi-generational team, examine your own paradigms first. How do you “see” generational or age differences? Do these differences “look” like a problem or do they “look” like an opportunity? Adjusting your lens will prepare you to be a more effective leader.

Next, talk to your team members and seek to understand their lens. Ask curious open-ended questions. Be prepared that they will probably be different than yours!

Hold team meetings that help connect everyone’s lens or point of view to a greater purpose or vision. Talk about shared values. Bringing a common vision or purpose into focus for everyone on the team provides the lens that will drive the “do” you are looking for to achieve results!

Classic leadership principles from Franklin Covey and others are more valuable than ever before in today’s age diverse workplace!
